The security industry has had a rough run in the media lately. And honestly, we think it needs to be talked about. Most of you would have seen the headlines. Earlier this year, the 60 Minutes Australia investigation into MA Services Group sent shockwaves through our industry. Micky Ahuja had cultivated the image of a self-made success story, charismatic and connected, at the helm of what appeared to be a booming security and cleaning empire. Behind the scenes, it was a very different story. The allegations included the underpayment of thousands of workers and the denial of basic entitlements such as superannuation and penalty rates, with investigators describing a shadow migrant security workforce employed by front companies that used corrupt payroll firms to evade tax obligations.
Following the 60 Minutes investigation, the Federal Court froze Ahuja’s Australian property portfolio after he had reportedly fled to Dubai, where he held a press conference insisting on his innocence. The fallout didn’t just hit MA Services. Major clients including Coles, the AFL, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Bunnings, Kmart, Amazon, and CBRE were drawn into the scandal, scrambling to manage their exposure as investigations widened. Coles argued it had been deceived, saying MA Services had provided falsified information, including information supplied for the purposes of wage and payroll reviews. The reputational damage, however, was already done.
And now, only months later, the AFL is back in the media headlines again after parting ways with another security provider at Marvel Stadium. This pattern should concern every procurement manager, operations leader, and business owner in Australia. We have been in the room when the numbers don’t add up. At JR Integrated Services Group, we have competed in tenders where we have been told our pricing is 20 per cent higher than the winning submission. Twenty per cent. In an industry where the Security Services Industry Award sets a floor on wages, where superannuation is legislated, where public liability insurance, workers compensation, and compliance costs are non-negotiable, a 20 per cent gap is not efficiency. It is not innovation. It is not a smarter business model. It is almost always someone not paying their people what they are owed.
We want to be clear: this post is not bitterness. JR Integrated Services Group has experienced significant growth over the past 12 months, and we are proud of what our team has built. This is a genuine industry concern, because we keep hearing from organisations that have signed contracts with providers who simply cannot deliver the service at the price they quoted without cutting corners on the people doing the work. What does that mean for you as a client? The risks are real, and they are growing. Reputational damage is now a documented consequence, not a theoretical one. The brands named in the MA Services scandal did not choose to underpay workers. But they appeared in a 60 Minutes expose regardless. In today’s environment, your supply chain is your brand. Legal and financial liability is also on the table. Regulators including the Fair Work Ombudsman and the ATO have signalled that clients who knew, or reasonably should have known, that their provider was not meeting award obligations may face consequences of their own. “We didn’t know” is becoming a harder defence to run, particularly when the price point should have raised questions. Operational disruption is the third risk, and often the most immediate. When a provider collapses, your site doesn’t get a warning. Your security is simply not there.
The adage exists for a reason. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. At JR Integrated Services Group, we price our services to cover our overheads, pay our people award rates with all entitlements included, and return a modest margin that allows us to reinvest in our team and our clients. We will never be the cheapest quote in the room. We are comfortable with that. What we will always be is compliant, transparent, and here when you need us. If you have received a quote or proposal that does not quite add up, and you want a confidential conversation about what the numbers should look like, reach out to our founder Rav directly at rav@jrssa.com.
